Crookston residents pleased to be back home...

VALENTINE, Neb. (AP) - Residents of a tiny town in the sandy rangeland of northern Nebraska have been allowed back into their homes, now that a wildfire has burned around it.

Valentine Fire Chief Terry Engles says the fire is heading southeast, away from Crookston, so the 70 or so residents were allowed back into town Thursday morning.

Firefighters are battling stiff winds in controlling the fire, which has blackened up to 75 square miles as it moved down from South Dakota.

He says 50-60 firefighters have the fire "knocked down around the perimeter, but it sparks up."

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for the area and says gusts could reach 70 mph on Thursday.

Engles says no injuries have been reported, but a few outbuildings have been damaged.
